Top 10 Cheap Ways to Entertain a Toddler

One of the most difficult things about raising a baby between the ages of 10 months to 2 years, is the limitations of places to go for easy entertainment. If your child is 2-years-old, and under, depending on where you live, there is little for them entertainment wise. With a 4-year-old, can can take them to a Burger King that has a play place, and let them roam the tunnels, and ball pit, while you enjoy your food. Even a 3-year-old has plenty of options for outdoor play grounds.

What do you do with a little toddler who is still not that great at walking?

1.) Take them to the grocery store for a quick trip.

This may sound simple, but it is cheap and effective. My husband and I grocery shop separately. So when one of us is at the store, the other one is at home with the baby. The benefit of this, is when I do take the baby to the store, she is mesmerized by all the sights and sounds.

The first item I pick up is always something she can hold, and play with. That will usually keep her entertained for a quarter of our grocery trip. Once she gets board with the first item, I give her another one which usually keeps her entertained until we check out.

2.) Items on a shelf

Now that baby girl is walking, I like to have her in the kitchen with me, when I'm cooking dinner. She loves to walk around this new space, and she does her best to get into everything.

We have a shoe rack/bench that she loves to pull things out of, so I will put objects there that aren't toys, but are still things that are safe for her to play with. Examples are; unopened package of tissue paper for gift wrapping, her baby shoes, box of pasta, plastic empty folder, etc.

This keeps her entertained long enough for me to get dinner ready.

3.) Set up a new play space.
If you have space in your home, I would highly suggest setting up a 2nd play space from the one you usually use. I have a craft room, that I installed an inflatable pool play pen in for baby girl. Details can be found here.

4.) Stroller ride
This can be hit or miss. Baby girl enjoys her stroller rides every time we go, but unfortunately this summer has been unseasonably hot and humid. Therefore, we haven't been able to go as often as I would like.

5.) Local Attractions
Depending on where you live, this may or may not be a great option for you. I live near a park that has a paved walking trail, a splash pool for toddlers, and lots of green space to roam. I let baby girl loose to see what she would be drawn to, and found she was mostly interested in pushing the stroller from behind. Sometimes kids are easily entertained.
We have a river nearby at the state park, and I plan to take baby girl there this weekend to see how she likes it.

6.) Water play
This is a summer option. I made this quick and easy water sensory station for baby girl. You can also purchase water tables for your toddler if they would prefer to stand and play. For more details please refer to my previous post.

7.) Mall Play Area
This is a great winter activity. Most malls will have a kids play area. It's a great way for kids to interact with each other, and to learn how to play with new objects.

8.) Tupperware time!
Baby girl loves playing with pots, pans, and tupperware. I give her a pile of them to play with, and she is content!

9.) Box it up!
What baby doesn't love having a box to play with? Baby girl loves being inside her big box, and banging the sides to see what noise they will make.

10.) Bubbles!
Blowing bubbles for your toddler is a cheap and easy way to entertain them. Kids are mesmerized by watching the bubbles magically appear, and float off into the wind.
